This beaded knife sheath was on an auction website. It is said to be a Sioux beaded knife case. From the picture it looks like it is quite old. Blues, reds, and yellows are the primary colors used. One half of the sheath has a symmetrical design, the other half has a design that reflects the shape of the knife that it houses. I'm not really sure why someone would be willing to auction off a piece of history like this, but they do.
I would say it was for money.....or if you were living in that time period, trade goods. The fact it is beautiful and great detail it was a great value to whoever possessed it. It (type of commodity) was probably traded more then than now. At some point everything has a price, I'd like to think that the original owner would be looking down in approval everytime it was part of a good trade...... and to be fair, being in such good condition it seems that anyone possessing it has taken good care of it.
